He studied a wide range of disciplines—including Shingaku ethics, Confucianism, Yangming philosophy, Japanese classical studies, Shinto, and Buddhism—while also teaching himself various painting styles such as Nanga (Southern School) and Yamato-e. His broad scholarship formed the foundation for his rich and distinctive artistic career.
